A glossary of musical theatre terminology
Musical theatre carries its own vocabulary. C3NTR's glossary holds the terms in one place: the technical names, your school's translation, and the article each term appears in.
- Triple threat
- A musical theatre performer who can sing, act and dance, and, more importantly, hold all three at once when the show requires it.
- Belt
- A particular kind of chest-voice singing taken higher than chest naturally goes, the loud, exciting sound of much contemporary musical theatre.
- Mix
- A blended vocal quality bridging chest voice and head voice, used for the bulk of contemporary musical theatre singing.
- Diction
- The clarity with which consonants and vowels are produced when singing, making the words intelligible to the back row.
- Legato
- Smooth, connected singing, each note flowing into the next without breaks or interruption.
- Want
- What a character is trying to get, achieve or make happen in this moment, sometimes called the objective.

How long does it take to set up?
