A glossary of drawing and painting terms
Drawing and painting carries its own vocabulary. C3NTR's glossary holds the terms in one place: the technical names, your studio's preferred terms, and the article each term appears in.
- Value
- The lightness or darkness of an area in a drawing or painting, considered apart from its colour.
- Gesture
- The line of action, energy or movement that runs through a figure or object, and the quick, loose drawing that tries to capture it.
- Contour
- The edge of a form, and the type of slow, eye-led drawing that follows it.
- Plein air
- Painting done outdoors, directly from the landscape, from the French *en plein air*, "in the open air."
- Hue, value and saturation
- The three properties that fully describe any colour.
- Complementary colours
- Two colours that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet.

Common questions
Can students only see their level's material?
Yes. Tag any article with a minimum level. New students see only foundations. Teachers see everything.
Does it cover atelier (Florence Academy etc.), Slade, RA, your method?
Yes. The starter is method neutral. atelier (Florence Academy etc.), Slade, RA can adapt without rewriting.
Can my studio customise the drawing and painting template?
Yes. Every article, technique and term is editable. Add your studio's preferred methods, your favoured materials and your house standards.
How long does it take to set up?
Most schools have a working library in under an hour. Import the starter template in a few taps, then edit anything that doesn't fit. Starting blank takes a little longer. Allow an hour or two to write your first ten articles. Students can use the app the day you publish.
Do I have to stop using my booking system?
No. C3NTR is a knowledge library for your curriculum, terminology and progressions. Booking, billing and scheduling stay with the tools you already use.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. Seed is free forever for up to 30 students, with no credit card required. Move up to School (£39/mo) or Academy (£69/mo) when you outgrow it.
