A glossary of pottery and ceramics terms
Pottery and ceramics carries its own vocabulary. C3NTR's glossary holds the terms in one place: the technical names, your studio's preferred terms, and the article each term appears in.
- Wedging
- The process of kneading clay before use, to remove air bubbles and give the clay an even consistency.
- Leather hard
- The stage at which clay has firmed up enough to hold its shape but is still cool, slightly damp, and workable.
- Bisque
- A pot that has been through its first firing, fired to around 1000°C, hard but still porous, ready to be glazed.
- Slip
- Clay watered down to a creamy, pourable consistency, used as a glue for joining clay surfaces and as a base for surface decoration.
- Sgraffito
- A surface-decoration technique where a layer of contrasting slip is scratched through to reveal the clay body beneath.
- Glaze
- A thin coating of glass-forming minerals applied to a bisqued pot and fused to its surface by a second firing.

Can my studio customise the pottery and ceramics template?
Yes. Every article, technique and term is editable. Add your studio's preferred methods, your favoured materials and your house standards.
How long does it take to set up?
Most schools have a working library in under an hour. Import the starter template in a few taps, then edit anything that doesn't fit. Starting blank takes a little longer. Allow an hour or two to write your first ten articles. Students can use the app the day you publish.
Do I have to stop using my booking system?
No. C3NTR is a knowledge library for your curriculum, terminology and progressions. Booking, billing and scheduling stay with the tools you already use.
